T-REX (Transportation Expansion Project) Light Rail - Denver, Colo.

Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) was a subcontractor to Kiewit and the scope of work included the install of the traction electrification (17 traction power substations and 19 miles of double-track overhead catenary), signal system, 100 variable message signs, communications system, and a new Operations Control Center tying in the new and existing LRT lines. This new extension was larger than the entire existing LRT system.

This design-build project was led by Kiewit in a joint venture with Parsons Transportation Group and included the construction of 19 miles of new double track light-rail, 13 stations, three parking structures, reconstruction of 17 miles of urban interstate, including eight interchanges and more than 75 bridges and tunnels for both modes. The LRT System was designed to accommodate increased ridership access as well as preparing for future expansion to surrounding areas such as Denver’s International Airport. The project included trackwork, systems integration, identification and relocation of over 400 utilities, significant maintenance of traffic planning, pedestrian facilities, a comprehensive public information program, right-of-way acquisition and stations. The T-REX Team took a collaborative approach and through team building, project issues were resolved without any cost overruns or schedule delays. The project was completed 22 months ahead of the owner’s original completion schedule with no claims or disputes. Due to the performance of the design-build team, the owner added more than $100 million in additional scope to the prime contract without impacting the project schedule. Together the team focused on achieving the project’s established goals, completing the project ahead of schedule and within budget.
