OCSD Variable Frequency Drives Upgrades Project - Huntington Beach, Calif.

Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) completed the OCSD VFD Upgrade project ahead of schedule. The project, which was an update to the twenty year old system, included the removal and replacement of three (3) 350 Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and upgrades to the associated control system for full automation at Plant No. 2.

MEC also assisted with the removal of twelve (12) existing 4″ power conduits, wire and control, and the installation of twelve (12) new 4″ PVC coated conduits with three (3) 350kcmil and one (1) 1/0 ground in each conduit, as well as a new SCADA system control cabinet and associated conduit and wire.

Each VFD upgrade was performed one at a time, and each unit was made operational before starting on the next. The project included extensive commissioning after each VFD was installed, allowing the owner beneficial occupancy of each drive.

MEC has been working with OCSD since 2006, and as a result of MEC’s impressive, “No Hurts” record on this project, in conjuction with the expedited completion time, OCSD and MEC continue a great working relationship.
