Farley Pavilion Electrical Room Upgrade - Boston, Mass.

In February 2012, Mass. Electric Construction Co. began the replacement of the electrical distribution feeding the Farley and Pavilion Buildings at Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) in Boston, Mass. The project was required to increase the efficiency of the system and addressed updates to electrical code.

The original project was scheduled for a year, but with added scope and the challenge of shutting down equipment in an active hospital, the schedule was extended to twenty-two months. The work consisted of removing the existing equipment, which included:

  • 7 switchboards
  • 3 oil filled transformers
  • 4 dry type transformers
  • a G&W Switch
  • old panel boards, and
  • all the old existing feeders

The new installation included installing 3 new switchboards, 6 ATS switches, 2 – 1500kva oil filled triplex transformers, new G&W switches, 19 new panels and new feeders in MI cable, pipe and wire and bus duct. The transformers run on FR3 fluid, which is environmentally friendly and runs cooler than oil. The transformers also have their own built in oil containment pans.

MEC worked closely with the hospital and engineer to identify changes to the project to improve the end product. This quality project was completed with zero safety incidents.
