Iatan Coal-Fired Power Plant - Weston, Mo.

MEC managed crews on electrical installations at the Iatan Coal-Fired Power Plant. Crews constructed and installed the Air Quality Control System (back-end or AQCS) for the existing 651 MW Unit I plant, and worked on the construction of major components for a new, 850 MW Unit II, including the Steam Turbine, Boiler, AQCS, and balance of plant (BOP) electrical work.

Since June 2007, working with and around several other trades and contractors, MEC had 45-50 staff constantly on-site, managing local union electricians on the installation of:

  • Switchgear
  • Seven (7) major power control module buildings (PCM)
  • High voltage bus work
  • Over 550,000 feet of conduit raceway
  • Approximately 65,000 feet of cable tray
  • Over five (5) million feet of power, control, and instrumentation cabling
  • More than 124,000 wire terminations

To complete this project in the time scheduled, many challenges were overcome. The main challenge that MEC successfully overcame was the installation of cables in a multi-tiered complex cable tray system, which was located within many areas of limited, difficult access.
