Midtown Tunnel Project

Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va

The Elizabeth River Tunnels Public-Private Partnership (P3) project is underway in the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. MEC’s work includes construction and pre-construction services for electrical systems for the new Midtown Tunnel and Martin Luther King Expressway, and rehabilitation of the existing Downtown and Midtown Tunnels. Through 2018, MEC will be working with SKW Constructors, a Skanska, Kiewit, Weeks Marine Joint Venture.

The Haynes Unit 5 & 6 Repowering is located in Long Beach, CA. The project is replacing two existing 300MW gas turbines with six new GE LMS100 gas turbine units.

El Pico Surface Water Treatment Plant

El Pico Surface Water Treatment Plant

Laredo, Texas

The El Pico Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) is a new 20MDG surface water treatment plant which extracts water from the Rio Grande River, and distributes the potable water to the City of Laredo, Texas. The plant has been engineered with an expandable infrastructure to eventually support up to an 80MGD capacity. Work began on the new plant in December 2011 and was completed in December 2013.

Leonard P. Zakim / Bunker Hill Bridge

Boston, Mass.

As the signature of Boston’s Big Dig project, the Leonard P. Zakim/Bunker Hill Bridge (Zakim Bridge), completed in 2002 and fully opened in 2004 is not only the world’s widest asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, but it is also the first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge in the nation. The bridge, which spans from Boston’s North End to Charlestown, MA, consists of ten lanes, and merges I-93 and U.S. Route 1 traffic across the Charles River, into and out of the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel.

Central Artery / Tunnel Electrical Finishes

Central Artery / Tunnel Electrical Finishes

Boston, Mass.

The goal of the Central Artery/Tunnel project, more commonly know as the “Big Dig”, was to replace the six-lane elevated highway with an eight-to-ten-lane underground expressway directly beneath the existing road, culminating at its northern limit in a 14-lane, two-bridge crossing of the Charles River. After the underground highway opened to traffic, the crumbling elevated highway was demolished and in its place is open space.

MEC worked as a subcontractor to Kiewit Pacific Co. at the Bakersfield Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). The project entailed the construction and upgrade of the WWTP from a 16mgd to 32mgd capacity plant.

Electric Construction Co. began the replacement of the electrical distribution feeding the Farley and Pavilion Buildings at Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) in Boston, Mass. The project was required to increase the efficiency of the system and addressed updates to electrical code.

Harry Tracy WTP Long-Term Improvements Project

San Bruno, Calif.

Located in San Bruno, California, the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant (HTWTP) Long-term Improvements Project was completed for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The HTWTP treats and delivers water stored in the Crystal Springs and San Andreas reservoirs to residents and businesses in North County, and is the San Francisco Peninsula’s sole source of emergency water.
